FAQ’s and concerns:
1.) How exactly does a coffee enema work?
A.) Organic coffee has a chemical make-up that is simulative and detoxifying when administered as an enema. There are two chemicals in coffee known as, theophylline and theobromine. These two chemicals combine to stimulate the relaxation of the smooth muscles causing dilation of blood vessels and bile ducts and counter inflammation in the gut.
The coffee enema is generally held for 12 minutes. With that in mind, take note -All the blood in the body passes through the liver every three minutes, which one may come to the realization that these enemas represent a efficient form of dialysis of blood across the gut wall. This chain of events produces a restorative effect in one’s body due to unburdening and neutralizing the body of toxins. (Healing newsletter, #13, May-June 1986.) Physiological Chemistry and Physics has stated that “coffee enemas cause dilation of bile ducts, which facilitates excretion of toxic cancer breakdown products by the liver” which is then carried out via the bowel.
In 1981, Dr. Lee Wattenburg and his colleagues showed that kahweol and cafestol palmitate found in coffee promote the activity of a key enzyme system in the liver, glutathione S-transferase, above the norm. When this happens, the bloodstream is detoxified and the enzyme system responsible for the removal of toxic free radicals from the serum is greatly assisted. In addition this enema stimulates the visceral nervous system to promote peristalsis and when the colon is indeed evacuated, the toxins and bile are carried out of the body. This provides an internal environment of greater homeostasis.
2.) I have an immediate urge to void as soon as I start the enema- I feel like I am wasting the coffee because it doesn’t even stay in a couple minutes, What should I do?
A.) Sometimes that will happen and that’s o.k. You have an option of doing a warm water enema first with no coffee in it to try to clear out the rectum first so the coffee enema can be retained and be more effective. Never force yourself to retain it if you feel you can’t. After you try the warm water first then use the coffee and administer however much you can to clamp down the tube BEFORE you start to feel urgency. Lay there and hold it for as many minutes as you can. You may slow add more and more if you think the bowel can hold it.
3.) I have tried the above and I seem to always have to void pretty quickly after administering the enema even when I do a warm water one first. Now what?
A.) You may have some spasticity issues, IBS or enzyme deficiency affecting the peristalsis in the bowel. Many people have had success with an enzyme formula that works great for a spastic bowel, give me a call and I can put aside #21 enzyme or order it for you. Some have added 1 TBSP of unsulphered organic molasses to the enema and have notice a calming effect in the bowel due to the increased minerals (magnesuim). You can even try Young Living’s Peppermint oil on your abdomen and 1 drop on your tongue in conjunction with the other two remedies- it will just add to your success and ease.
4.) Do I have to worry about my electrolytes with these enemas?
A.) Coffee enemas will not waste materials and electolytes because they have already been absorbed in the previous sections of the intestines. This enema is NOT for repeated use or numerous times in a row. Dr. Gerson has cautioned, “Patients have to know that the coffee enemas are not given for the function of the intestines but for the stimulation of the liver.” And remember to always follow the general standard for adult fluid intake and drink a minimum of ½ your weight in ounces of water per day. This is of paramount importance with or without doing enemas.
5.) I have administered the enema and waited for 12 minutes, I have no urge to void, what should I do?
A.) Anytime you have felt the urge to release when you should, stand up and let gravity move the waste and liquid down in to the rectum. If that doesn’t work, try administering a warm water enema until you feel the need to release, do not hold it in…. just void immediately.
6.) I am very sensitive to caffeine; will this have a “caffeine” effect on me?
A.) You should not feel nervous or jittery after the enema because the coffee/caffeine does not get absorbed systemically like when you drink it.
7.) I feel jittery after the enema, what did I do wrong?
A.) Tcoffee was too strong, not diluted properly
8.) Can this enema “perforate” anything or damage the colon?
A.) In the history of doing these enemas correctly with the supplies provided, you are not at risk for any such injury. The soft, flexible red catheter is extremely gentle and is only inserted 2-6 inches into the rectum. The build-up of toxins poisoning your system is most detrimental to your body, the removal of these with this modality, has been deemed exceptionally safe for centuries.
9.) It hurts when I insert the catheter into my rectum, what could that be?
A.) It could be hemorrhoids. Due to constipation, straining when having a bowel movement, and/or a possible vascular weakness you may have internal hemorrhoids. Some have noted the pain feels razor sharp almost like a cutting feeling when they have internal hemorrhoids. Bowel evacuation is that much more necessary. A note of caution: If you have any open lesions or bleeding you may want to consider using just warm water or a wheatgrass implant to heal the area prior to administering any coffee enemas.
10.) This may not have to have anything to do with a coffee enema but sometimes in the past I have felt sick right before a bowel movement, why is that?
A.) That’s because the waste material in the sigmoid and rectum is of TOXIC quality and is being RE-absorbed into the enterohepatic circulation and sent back to the liver. This puts your body through unnecessary hard work and “re-poisoning” yourself (aka: auto-intoxication). That should be reason enough to go to the bathroom as soon as you feel the urge- especially an urge accompanied with a “sick” feeling. Let your body purge those toxins immediately! Do not try to hold onto that toxic waste!
11.) How often can I do these?
A.) That is a question that your natural health professional needs to answer. You need to be evaluated according to your individual health and personal needs. Remember, this is to assist your body in detoxification. To assist your bowel in normal regular elimination, consult with your natural health professional to start a program more appropriately suited for that concern.
For people with cancer, the Gerson protocol involves daily coffee enemas, one every three to four hours. As part of a detox program that does not include combating cancer, it is recommended taking roughly one to two coffee enemas per week. For both cancer patients and those free of the disease, Gerson's suggestion of taking more than one coffee enema on the same day is wise to follow, because the first enema series only pulls toxins from the colon and not from the small intestines. Remember, the therapeutic action of the coffee enema is on the gallbladder and liver. The ensuing increase of bile which is dumped into the small intestines needs time to pass into the colon, where it then needs to be eliminated. Taking a second enema series four to six hours after the first can be crucial to pulling from your body what was dumped into your small intestines previously that day.
12.) Can you recommend any bowel/liver cleansing books that I can read?
A.) Yes the following is my recommendations:
-Tissue Cleansing through Bowel Management by Bernard Jensen
-Colon Health, The Key to a vibrant life, by Dr. Norman Walker
-The Colon Health Handbook, (14 revised edition or newer) by Robert Gray
- Your liver, Your Lifeline by Jack Tips
13.) When should I do a coffee enema?
A.) This should be discussed with your natural health professional, but many have used coffee enemas for pain relief, migraines, flu-like symptoms, food-poisoning or in conjunction with a bowel, liver or parasite cleanse. A general rule is if you feel your body being “bogged-down” with an infection, a cold coming on or you have pain. Many have noted instant relief or decrease in symptoms when administered right at the onset of symptoms.
